Years 7 & 8 @ appleby
Our Year 7-8 students at Appleby enjoy many opportunities. They form a leadership team, meeting weekly with the principal to solve problems, do some school service, and implement great ideas. Opportunities to lead the younger tamariki really bring out the best in them and this is balanced with their own classroom learning programme, with structured literacy and mathematics programmes, as well as curriculum coverage at Phase 3 of Te Mātaiaho, The New Zealand Curriculum.
We are proud to be an Enviroschool and we frequently connect learning to our local environment and local industries. There are outdoor education trips offered each year and a bi-annual noho marae. The practical Technology programme includes woodwork, food technology, textiles technology and a choice of modules. Modules can include languages, dance, the arts, sports leadership and extension, extension technology and design and even wheelchair basketball! As we get to know our Wakefield Yr 7-8 friends we build on this connection to make sports teams for various tournaments throughout the year, including Summer and Winter Tournaments. Our connection with local iwi provides an authentic relationship where Tikanga Maori is nurtured, through visits to marae (noho) and Te Ao Maori projects, kapa haka group and festivals.
