Changes to the team

A huge “thank you” to Sefton Sharp for his contribution to the Board of Trustees over the last 3 years. Sefton resigned from the Board this term, as changes to his working hours have made it difficult for him to attend our evening meetings. We will miss Sefton’s expertise in property management and his sense of humour.

We are now looking for someone to fill the gap that Sefton has left and would ask you all to  think seriously about putting your hand up if you are interested. Formal elections are held every three years, with the next election due May 2013. The Board has the power to co-opt parent Trustees during the interim period(s).

Everyone has the ability to add value to our team.  You do not need any specific skills, just  a passion want to make a positive contribution to the learning outcomes and environment of all children that attend Appleby. A good team is one contains people with a   diverse range of backgrounds and skills – united by a common focus. We do not get involved with the day-to-day management of the school, but set “big picture targets” and review progress towards those on a regular basis. We meet twice a term in the evenings.

If you think you might be interested, please give any of the current team a call. We would    each be happy to chat with you over a cuppa on what’s involved and whether it would be a good fit for you.

BOT Planning session

In addition to our regular meetings, the board met last week to review our long term (3 – 5 year) strategic goals and set our specific targets for 2012.  The Ministry of Education now require our 2012 annual plan and school charter to be submitted by 1 February 2012 (instead of May). We will be working hard to meet this deadline over the coming months and we will advise you when a copy of the 2012 document is available for viewing from the school website early next year.

Our last meeting for this year will be held on Tuesday 20th December at 7.30pm in the school staffroom if anyone is interested in attending.

Summary of Meeting – 3 November

The meeting covered a variety of topics, but of most relevance was the approval of significant expenditure to fund our 6th teacher to replace Linda Compton. Unfortunately our student role number fell just below the “cusp” required on 1 July 2011 to secure Ministry of Education funding for our 6th teacher for 2012.  As a Board we have always tried to ensure our funding is spent maximizing learning outcomes for our children. One of the most effective ways to do this is to reduce the student/teacher ratio. Without a 6th teacher, class numbers would rise to around 30 per class.

The money raised from the school fair this year will therefore go towards funding our 6th teacher. We are very conscious that with the record amount raised that many will wish to see money spent in some “tangible” areas (such as an upgrade of the school pool and carpark). We are still working on these but are trying to explore other funding sources to achieve this. If anyone is keen to give up some time to apply for community grants on behalf of the school we would be eternally grateful. A small amount of your time could go a long way. Please let us know if anyone has experience in this area or is keen to help.

2011 Student Acheivement Results

The tables below set out our 2011 academic targets and the learning outcomes acheived for our student group as a whole. We are confident we have robust techniques in place to effectively evaluate children's progress towards National Standards. We use a range of tests to ensure our evaluations of each student are sound and we have spent a significant amount of time during the year moderating to ensure our measurements are consistent between children of all age groups.

On behalf of the board of Trustees, we would like to wish Linda Compton and her family all the very best for the future. You will always be welcomed back to Appleby and we hope you keep us posted of your adventures.

Once again the results speak for themselves. Thank you to Graham, Ian, Nicky, Jenny, Raewyn, Jodie & Linda. Thanks also to Pam, Alison, Anna and Ann. You are all doing a fabulous job.

Wishing you all a very Merry Christmas! and happy New Year.

 Kindest regards
